<< <i>blu62vette, It would be neat if you had a chance to image adamlaneus's (ex spacemonkey, ex becoka) PCGS AU58 1911 $10 for side by side comparison!
maybe he will bring it to Santa Clara in a couple weeks....

<< <i>Here's a 1910-D, for comparison. This one's a PCGS 62 (was NGC 63). Todd's is at least a grade nicer, maybe two. And with interesting color.

Thanks for the comparison coin, I like having similar coins to look at. I do want to clarify the coin belongs to another forum member but not me.

Can you explain why? I would be curious as to what you are seeing and respect your thoughts.

I've collected MS64 $10 Indians up until I sold em off in 2006...
Based on the surface conditions on this example I thought it was a MS62, which was bumped to 63 for color.
Come now. There's no way that coin has 62 surface conditions even if the mark on the cheek is as noticeable in hand as on the image - which I doubt based on both the PCGS grade and the CAC sticker.

I never even saw the CAC sticker as I was already eating my shoe when I saw the grade on that label.

Which goes to show you how impossible it is to grade coins based on an image. Marks on the face appear severe enough and in enough quantity to warrant a 62 from the image.
Kind of easy to call it after the OP has posted the grade (and the CAC) isn't it

I disagree - based on my earlier call of 63. The fields are way too pristine for the coin to ever receive a 62 IMO

We certainly can agree to disagree, especially when trying to guess a grade based on images online. I think on coins like the $10 Indian and Barber coinage, facial hits that are numerous tend to be overly distracting and in my eye tend to lead me away from even a choice (63) designation. Maybe I grade these kind of coins too conservatively based on that, apparently PCGS and CAC think this coin is a 64, so I would say that this coin probably looks much better in hand than the images, and the facial hits are not as severe as depicted. At least I hope so...

Have you been returning these MS66's to China
64 it is and I am not too surprised
